Library Foundation

The Cupertino Library Foundation and Library recently have announced the new Foundation initiative Cupertino Library Life-line. Please consider joining this Foundation initiative which will help offer additional opportunities for instruction, education, enrichment and life-long learning to all area families at all times, 365 days a year.

The Cupertino Library Foundation working with an advisory panel has committed resources to help sponsor various Art Displays in the Library. Artists who are interested in contributing to this display can upload their entry via Artist Entry Upload Form.

The Cupertino Library Foundation Board has worked closely with the Cupertino Community Librarian to prioritize the probable elements, as well as a timeline for the renovation of the Teen Room. Please see Teen Room Enhancement Project for more information about this exciting initiative being led by the Library Foundation.

The Cupertino Library Foundation sponsored the Cupertino 2010 Silicon Valley Reads event and an essay contest. For more information on the event, visit Cupertino 2010 Silicon Valley Reads webpage.

The Foundation's Vision for the Cupertino Library is to encourage life-long learning and self-improvement, so that library users of all ages may become more knowledgeable and better informed, more enlightened and more proactive members of the community. The Foundation envisions the Cupertino Library as a World-class Public Library Facility for:

    The Foundation has helped to raise over $2,700,000 for the benefit of the Cupertino Library

    What the Cupertino Library Foundation's Furnishings Campaign Has Added to the Library:

  • If you have enjoyed sitting in one of the comfortable leather or fabric lounge chairs in the New Book Area
  • If you have spread out your library materials on one of the many study tables around the library
  • If you have enjoyed sitting outside in the Courtyard at one of the bistro tables
  • If you have enjoyed a peaceful moment, sitting at a desk in the Quiet Study Room
  • If you have shared a book with a child or grandchild, sitting on one of the couches in the Beginning Reader area
  • If you have seen children sitting in the child-size chairs with the seahorse cutouts on them in the Picture Book area
  • If you have rested on the bench across from the Aquarium?
  • Then you have experienced at least part of what has been brought to the Library by the Cupertino Library Foundation's Furnishings Campaign.

    Cupertino Library Foundation meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month in Cupertino Library Staff Conference Room at 7:00 p.m.

    History and Mission
    The Cupertino Library Foundation was established at the request of the Cupertino City Council in 1994 at a time when the library system was experiencing severe budget cuts. The Council asked two Library Commissioners, Allan Bidwell and Charles Liggett, to gather board members and to establish a foundation to match the requested funds from the City to maintain Library hours and to continue the purchase of books and also specifically to raise funds for the Library.

    The organizational meeting of the Foundation was held on January 26, 1994, where Edward Jajko was elected the first Board President. The Friends of the Cupertino Library loaned the start-up money needed to process the application for tax-exempt status and the costs of preparation

    The Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization. Its stated purpose is To raise money to enhance the Library. It seeks major donations from corporations and the business community and from other foundations as well as individual donations and planned gifts and bequests. Most recently, and again at Council's request, the Foundation has successfully concluded a 4-year effort to raise from the community the $1.2 million to help furnish the new Library so that Council could construct the best building possible with City funding.

    The Foundation has established an endowment fund for the future financial needs of the Library and has produced a brochure entitled, How You Can Help the Library through a Planned Gift, available at the Library or downloadable here in PDF, with information on planned gifts, gifts of stock, real estate, life insurance, deferred giving, charitable remainder unitrusts, charitable remainder annuities, charitable lead trusts, and bequests.

    Cupertino Library Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization chartered to provide financial support to our community library. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. Audited financial statements of the Foundation are available upon request. (Federal tax ID # 77-0372742)
